Briefing with Manners went well besides Robinson getting her name wrong, I don’t know if he was bad with names or just trying to make her think he wasn’t interested… He was definitely interested I think. After getting a few things from logistics we were out of the compound in our signed out white van from ACME Plumbing.
We heard normal sounds coming from his house once we were in range. Robinson went to trying to hack into the guys home network after he pinpointed it down to the right one. Myself I went out for a jog to check out things with my own eyes, there were several people out jogging as well some with dogs, some people were friendly others were just eyes ahead doing their thing. Very suburbia like in my opinion. After taking a photo or two of the signs of the security system at Mallard’s house and a few others while I looked like I was picking a new song to jog to I made my way back to the van and jumped in when the cost was clear.
Since there wasn’t that much going on in the house and Robinson had gotten into the man’s network once night fell Gaara opted to check things out inside the house.
The rest of us volunteered not to blow his cover and wait in the back of the van.
Armed with his gear, a go pro head camera and several more bugs he made his way into the neighbors house and shimmied up the wall. We made a few comments from the peanut gallery about his jump from building to building. Between Robinson’s digital snooping and Gaara’s vibe of the house all we had to go on was he was probably sleeping. Tootsie chimed in that it was Mallard we heard snoring possibly it wasn’t even human. Not knowing if it was a creature, pet, or a recording we debated on getting in. With Gaara saying he wanted to get in I told him to hold on getting out a rucksack and concentrated. The group wondered where I managed to get a mobile laptop from the security system as I started tapping away and I just explained I really didn’t know how Ciphers worked but I needed Robinson to write me a password cracker app in about two minutes. Meanwhile I took the username of Mallard Robinson had found and started researching Twizpava, supposedly related to Ardeyn the adventure game with dice or something. Robinson seemed to know too much about it so me not knowing anything evened it out I think.
While he was working I tried just typing in the username backwards and I was in and told Robinson he could stop since the password was his username backwards. We scoffed a bit on how simple it was and we had an odd moment where we bonded over password security before we got back on the job. Telling Gara the sensors were off but he’d still have to break in didn’t get him in but at least he wouldn’t set anything off. As we watched him work his head darted out into the street and we saw a spotlight before he dropped or fell into the bushes. After we heard the car go by we looked out the back window to realize it was a police cruiser. We reported a little late that there was a cop car coming to see Gara’s camera popping out the bushes and looking around, he questioned if it was normal so we researched it, considering there were several break-ins recently it would explain all the security systems and the neighborhood sweeps from the police. After he jimmied a window open and entered he prowled around the office.
With the front door unlocked and most of the man floor explored Gaara was checking out the basement. Looking down at the steps Robinson yelled out “It’s a trap!” explaining polished wood steps were a classic trap. Gaara thinking him crazy was surprised to heard a click and the stairs turning into a slide down into the basement. With the warning he was able to jump back up the stairs using the walls.
With the rest of the party on their way to the house we came in from the front dor and reviewed everything he had noticed on the main floor in detail. In his office we checked out the creepy bird cage Gaara had noticed earlier with a stuffed parrot in it. It was ‘Strange’ but I thought it was odd, I was convinced on seeing it that our charge for surveillance was a serial killer possibly and we should just kill him, no normal person would have such a thing. A filing cabinet got us some interesting things though, one was a dossier of Ramos an Estate Agent in Ardon which Robinson started taking photos of and uploading to a digital dropbox, Tootsie found something called the Gospel of Lotan and pointed out to Robinson where it mentioned Quantum Code. He pulled out his pistol and chambered a round looking at Gara and saying it was go time to exterminate with extreme prejudice. I found a book titled Master of Lairs.
Exploring the rest of the main floor got use a few ciphers and a book called Player’s Guide to Ardeyn which I handed to Robinson since he seemed the most likely to know about things.
Upstairs we found we was not in his bed sleeping since Robinson explained the bugs had someone snoring yet we didn’t hear anything in the rooms around us. Be found two paintings of interest, supposedly one of a man named ‘The Master’ and another fractal picture depicting something titled The Strange. snapping pictures of everything of interest in high definition and confiscating most of his toys the group waited while Gara reported in our findings. With the house searched except for the basement she was a little bothered.
Either he had a line on a quantum code or it was nothing and she’d like us to figure out what was in the basement. Worse case scenario we needed to find Mallard and stop the world from being destroyed. Not the status report you want to hear about 8am on a weekday. With Gaara letting us know the basement needed to be searched I pulled out Parachord found someplace for him to anchor it and knotted off sever bits tossing it down. After searching around for a bit he stated besides decorations (Christmas) he didn’t see anything odd, there were a lot of decorations. Nothing seemed out of place until Gara and outselves via his head camera noticed something jumping out of a wardrobe covered in bandages. Tootsie was caught off guard reading a Twilight fanfiction story but I yelled for Gaara to get out hearing him getting slammed around. Robinson surprised me by latching the Paracord around his arm and sliding down looking for a shot. Gaara came back to the rope and started to climb up getting me to pull the cord up to get him up faster. Robinson yelled up if he should take the shot, Looking at Gaara I tossed the rope down and yelled only if he wanted to die and to get his but upstairs. I don’t know if I motivated him by yelling “Mummy!” louder and faster the closer he got but between me and Gaara we pulled Robinson up who seemed quite motivated. Tootsie tossed something down the stairs and we watched the shambling Mummy see something and try and back pedal. I’m not really sure what it was but it looked like Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, and the Tooth Fairy, or people dressed like them were staring at the portal and pushing each other to get towards it. When the portal closed and popped leaving behind a little glitter we all just stared. We looked at Tootsie who explained with a smile she put him on Time Out. If she asked the smile wasn’t creepy… (It was creepy). Looking at Gaara we tried to bandage him up and others took a break to wrap their minds around things. Robinson stated we needed to go back down. Gaara thought him mad but Robinson pointed out as a game designer and experienced ‘dungeon master’ he knew you put traps and guardians in front of the really big loot. With a sigh we all agreed only see Tootsie sliding down the smooth slant down using the Paracord to steer herself.
Feeling a little ashamed that the 13 year old girl of the group was more adventurous and bravery than the rest of us we followed. The pair of Robinson and Tootsie found a secret wall that slide away to reveal a door with the keys we had found earlier we opened a large bullky iron door to found the biggest head scratcher so far.
The room had shackled in the ground and scratch marks in various places, plus a painting. When Tootsie said it was a recursion key I made an executive decision. I stated we should take the painting and anything else we wanted since this guy was a dick. The part considering the mummy and stairs agreed. Back upstairs after taking photos of the torture cell area the group opted to take his expresso machine take photos of the large amount of hot sauce the man had and found what Robinson called Cthulu steaks. Since I thought I saw the frozen meat move I volunteered to not be the one to touch, but someone needed to bag and tag it.
Back into the van with all our items. Mentally I had a line already to go if someone stopped us but everyone was busy with their own mid morning routine. Back at the Estate we stationed our new expresso machine and confiscated expresso beans in our bull pen area, tagged and uploaded all our photos and odd evidence (paintings of the Stange, the master, the recursion key, and large kraken meat into evidence).
Manners was a bit surprised by our findings and the fact Mallard was now back to being an unknown was unsettling considering he had been under survelliance for years. I pointed out the easily place to get away with a big con was making people think you were doing little ones. She looked at me funny on the analogy but got what I meant. With the tech guys around I asked them to run facial recognition on the painting of ‘The Master’ since he seemed to be the big player in the equation. Having attempted a coup and raiding burial grounds for tech possibly or something else he was a wanted man in Ardon compounding the fact from our evidence found, if he was looking for a Quantum Code he wouldn’t do anything beneficial with it for anyone but himself.
New orders to investigate Mallard and the locations mentioned in his notes in Ardeyn using the recursion key were given, I asked if we needed to think Ramos was compromised. Manners didn’t think so but I reminded her we had bad intel on Mallard, in the very least they’re monitoring her and the Estate Safehouse possibly.
